Abstract

Peace is a social phenomenon that must be addressed in education to transform the culture of violence and the breakdown of the social fabric of communities, and teachers are the primary actors with the potential to support peacebuilding. The objective of this study is to understand teachers’ social imaginaries of peacebuilding, based on forms of being/doing and saying/representing in everyday life. The study adopts a qualitative perspective with a hermeneutic approach, based on a research design grounded in complementarity. The participating social actors were 33 public school teachers, and discourse was analyzed in terms of its referential, expressive, and pragmatic functions. The results identify social dynamics that shape meanings that support two types of imaginaries of peacebuilding: educating citizens for social transformation, and peace as an educational goal. The results indicate that these social actors are able to create new realities, as key agents who make peace possible and incorporate it into their professional practice as educators.
