Resumen

En este trabajo se analiza el concepto de las profesiones partiendo de la obra La riqueza de las naciones de Adam Smith. Se discuten los factores que afectan en el reconocimiento hacia los diferentes tipos de ocupaciones, así como las razones del surgimiento inevitable de las profesiones en las sociedades modernas. Se revisan situaciones del siglo XIX en Inglaterra y Estados Unidos como contexto para el debate en torno a las profesiones, entre analistas contemporáneos. Finalmente, se vislumbran los retos que la actual globalización impone a las profesiones, ante prácticas restrictivas que obstaculizan la flexibilidad, esencial en las economías europeas, norteamericanas y asiáticas.
